In a world increasingly defined by competition, comparison, and constant pressure, many individuals are quietly pushed toward emotional exhaustion and mental health challenges. Often, these struggles don’t appear dramatic—subtle shifts in mood, motivation, or clarity can signal deeper concerns.
According to the World Health Organization, one in every 18 people lives with a mental health disorder, with anxiety and depression among the most common. Since the pandemic, these numbers have risen sharply. Sedentary lifestyles, relentless 9-to-5 demands, unemployment, and economic uncertainty have placed the mind in a constant state of overdrive—eventually leading to burnout and mental fog.
In times like these, the need for empaths and skilled mental health professionals becomes undeniable. Leading this charge with compassion and purpose is Dr. María Rodríguez, Founder and CEO of Care Counseling Center.
As our cover feature, we take a closer look at her journey and the vision behind Care Counseling Center.
From Inspiration to Action
“My passion for mental health counseling stems from my own life experiences.”
Growing up as a first-generation American of Dominican descent, Dr. Rodríguez encountered challenges familiar to many immigrant families—cultural displacement, family separation, and the emotional weight of navigating an unfamiliar system. These early experiences shaped her worldview and instilled in her a deep sense of empathy.
Having lived through similar struggles, Dr. Rodríguez naturally developed a profound sensitivity toward those facing trauma and mental health challenges.
“Seeing people feel isolated, unheard, and overwhelmed inspired me to become their advocate and guide,” she shares.
Motivated by a desire to create meaningful change, she founded Care Counseling Center—a space dedicated to compassionate, culturally sensitive, and holistic mental health care for individuals, children, families, and couples. Her mission is simple yet powerful: to provide a safe environment where healing, understanding, and growth can thrive.
A Foundation Built on Expertise and Empathy
Dr. Rodríguez’s path was shaped by both rigorous academic training and decades of hands-on experience. She earned her Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from William Paterson University and later completed her PhD in General Psychology at Capella University. Beyond academia, more than two decades as a psychotherapist and adjunct professor of Women’s and Gender Studies and Psychology truly defined her approach.
Her work addressing trauma, immigration challenges, and mental health disparities revealed a critical need for advocacy within therapy. Ensuring individuals feel seen, validated, and heard became central to her vision—ultimately leading to the creation of Care Counseling Center, a place where healing is both personal and culturally informed.
The Birth of Care Counseling Center
Driven by advocacy and a desire to bridge gaps in mental health care, Dr. Rodríguez built Care Counseling Center from the ground up. She witnessed firsthand how language barriers, financial limitations, and cultural stigma prevented many—particularly immigrants and underserved communities—from seeking help.
Determined to change this narrative, she created a welcoming, judgment-free space offering high-quality, culturally responsive care. The journey was not without obstacles—funding challenges, team building, and earning community trust tested her resilience. Yet her unwavering belief in the mission carried her forward. Today, Care Counseling Center stands as a beacon of hope, offering not just therapy, but empowerment and advocacy.
Balancing Purpose and Responsibility
As a counselor, entrepreneur, and professor, Dr. Rodríguez wears many hats. She credits discipline, strategic delegation, and self-care for maintaining balance. A strong, dedicated team allows her to focus on direct client work, teaching, and advocacy.
She believes deeply in practicing what she teaches—setting boundaries, seeking support, and staying connected to purpose. While the journey is demanding, witnessing clients heal and grow makes it profoundly rewarding.
An Evolving Counseling Philosophy
At the heart of Dr. Rodríguez’s practice lies compassion, cultural sensitivity, and empowerment. Over time, her philosophy has evolved to include trauma-informed and strength-based approaches, recognizing that healing is not linear.
Her work centers on resilience—meeting clients where they are and equipping them with tools to reclaim their lives. For her, true healing begins with understanding, validation, and the courage to move forward.
Comprehensive, Collaborative Care
Care Counseling Center offers a wide range of services, from individual therapy to immigration support. Dr. Rodríguez emphasizes collaboration, continuous education, and cultural competence across her team.
“We work together—therapists, case managers, and support staff—to provide holistic care and advocacy,” she explains.
Creating a culturally responsive environment was non-negotiable. “The moment someone says, ‘I feel understood,’ is when progress truly begins,” she shares.
Breaking Stigma, Building Trust
One of the greatest challenges has been confronting mental health stigma within immigrant communities, where therapy is often misunderstood. Through outreach, community partnerships, and educational workshops, Dr. Rodríguez worked to reframe mental health care as a strength rather than a weakness.
These efforts transformed Care Counseling Center into a trusted community resource. “It’s not just about services—it’s about dignity, respect, and being truly heard,” she emphasizes.
Recognition, Resilience, and Growth
Recognized as one of the Top 25 Executives of New Jersey and honored for excellence in mental health care, Dr. Rodríguez remains grounded.
“Awards are meaningful, but lives transformed—that’s the real success,” she says.
As a woman entrepreneur, she has faced skepticism, yet continues to lead with confidence and clarity. Her advice to aspiring women professionals:
“Believe in your vision, seek mentorship, and never be afraid to take up space.”
Mentorship and the Road Ahead
Mentorship has been pivotal in Dr. Rodríguez’s journey, and she now invests deeply in guiding future counselors through training, supervision, and leadership development. Looking ahead, she envisions mental health care that is more accessible, integrative, and community-centered.
Her future plans include expanding telehealth, strengthening trauma-informed programs, collaborating with legal professionals for immigrant advocacy, and supporting mental health initiatives in schools to promote early intervention.
The Legacy She Aims to Leave
When asked about her legacy, Dr. Rodríguez answers with quiet conviction:
“I hope to be remembered for resilience, compassion, and advocacy.”
For her clients, she hopes to be someone who listened deeply and helped them reclaim their power. For her peers, she wishes to inspire continued efforts toward accessible, inclusive, and compassionate mental health care.
“At the end of the day,” she reflects, “my mission has always been about empowering others—helping them move from chaos to clarity, just as I have in my own life.”
